Artist Statement

Texas is a land of distinctive environments and intense heat. As a native resident of Texas, I continue to be struck by the harsh terrains and amazed by the fertile pockets of life hidden within those terrains. Here and there, an explorer will find a cool area with shallow pools of water, exotic limestone formations, and hidden wildlife. Livestock, birds and wild animals survive wearing the rich and lush colors of the earth. Horses cast long, majestic shadows. Longhorns, long a part of Texas history, stand defiantly against unwanted two-legged intruders. Portraying these unique animals and their rugged terrains is the subject of my life's work.

I am an oil painter working in the traditional way; I use the classical technique of layering glazes on canvas. This provides me with the strong contrasts and values I seek in my paintings. I am influenced by the work of the Great Masters, including both Vuillard and Bonnard, whose works are known for exhibiting strengths in pattern and movement. I am thrilled by new terrain and new landscapes and look for an opportunity to paint everywhere that I can.
